Chapter 11: Audiovisual Technologies
One type of traditional audio technology is a tape recorder, one way that I can see them being used in the classroom is the way we used them in one of the classrooms I tutored in for Intro to Education. We recorded the students sight-reading a couple of sentences on a tape at the beginning of the semester and then a different set of sentences at the end of the semester so we could see how much they progressed throughout the year. This could be done in any classroom to show both the student how much they had improved and the parents around parent conference time. Plus the students had a ton of fun recording them and hearing how they sounded on tape. A more emerging technology in the audio technology category is the iPod. There are a TON of uses for these in the classroom. They too have a recording device on them so they can do the same idea as before but they can also be used for other subjects such as science because of various applications they have such as a night sky application that would allow for students to see the constellations they are learning about as they are learning about them. An example of traditional visual technology would be a Bulletin board and it could be used to put up pictures of all the students and they can write short paragraphs about themselves and put them under the pictures so their classmates can learn more about them. An example of emerging visual technology is Internet video which would allow for teachers to access more varying video's and clips to help their students then it would be to have to find different DVDs or VCR tapes. Would also allow for the teacher to view and access them quicker then it would be to find the physical copy of them. An example of how this could be used in a classroom would be if you were trying to give an example of what good public speaking looked like you could find a clip online to show your students what to do, and what not to do.
Chapter 6: Digital Technologies in the Classroom
I would prefer to teach in a classroom that has more technology rather than one that has less because I believe that digital technology is our future and therefore we should make students familiar with it now rather than later. Nowadays people are constantly being exposed to new technologies and most don't go through a day without using some kind of technology, from a computer, to a cellphone, to the newest craze Ipads. It would also create more learning opportunities for the students because they would have more easily accessible resources. There would also be more opportunities for the teacher as far as lesson plans go and activities for the student because they could have more resources readily available in the classroom. I however do not believe that there should be less non-digital technologies in the classroom then we have now, there is a certain satisfaction that comes from let's say creating an art project with your hands instead of drawing one on the Smartboard or on an Ipad. Though I really don't think that you should have a classroom that is lacking in digital technologies if you can prevent it because of what I previously stated, Technology is a HUGE part of our lives now and it's here to make our lives easier and provide new opportunities for student learning.
